Early Life and Education:
Doris Burke was born on January 4, 1965 in West Islip, New York, but raised in Manasquan, New Jersey. She has seven siblings, of whom she is the youngest of all. She studied in Manasquan High School where she played as a point guard. She started playing basketball in the second grade. She graduated from Providence College with a degree in health service administration/social work and she also earned her master’s in education at Providence.
Doris married Gregg Burke in 1989. Gregg was the sports instruction news director for women players. Gregg saw Doris playing basketball, this is how they met. The couple has two children, born in 1990s. Their married life didn’t work out well and they filed for divorced. The main cause for the divorce and any arrangements regarding children has been kept a secret.
Although they are getting divorce Gregg has always supported Doris in her career. She says:
“If it were not for Gregg, I would have left the career long back and I would not have been on television”.
Burke began her broadcasting career in 1990 as an analyst for women's games for her alma mater on radio. Prior to ESPN she was a women’s basketball analyst at Providence College. Burke has been covering basketball at ESPN since 1991. She works a variety of ESPN assignments, including the NBA, women’s basketball regular-season and NCAA Championship, men’s basketball regular-season and Championship Week, in addition to other ESPN activities.
Since 2003, Burke has taken on additional roles and assignments for NBA coverage including sideline reporter and game analyst during select ESPN NBA telecasts. She also serves as sideline reporter for NBA playoff games and the NBA Finals on ABC. Additionally, she hosts ESPN’s Kia NBA Countdown on Wednesdays during the NBA season.
In 2000 Doris became the earliest woman to become a color analyst for a New York Knicks match on radio and TV. Doris Burke is also the earliest woman to be a forecaster for Big East men’s games as well as the first lady to be the primary forecaster on a men’s college basketball seminar package.
Since 2003 she has received many awards and has been inducted into Hall of Fames which is a proof that she has been working hard for her career.
