Willie Geist

Known as “Willie Geist”, William Russell Geist is a correspondent at NBC News and NBC Sports. He currently covers Olympics for NBC. He is a fill-in anchor for the Today Show’s lead anchors Matt Lauer, Lester Holt, Natalie Morales and Carson Daly.

Geist primarily works as a co-anchor on NBC’s “Today Show” ’s section “Today’s take” and “Morning Joe” for MSNBC.

His career began at CNN Sports Illustrated, where he worked as an editor and producer. Geist eventually moved up to be a reporter and field producer for CNN sports. For CNN, Geist covered The Masters, The NCAA Final Tour, and The Super Bowl.

Geist turned to writing and production in 2004 when he went on to work for “I, Max”. “I, Max “ was a short-lasting show that was hosted by Max Kellerman, featured on Fox Sports Net. A year later, Geist became a senior producer of the show “The Situation with Tucker Carlson”.

In 2007, Geist replaced Don Imus in MSNBC’s morning show. He was given a permanent position as a co-host on Morning Joe the same year.

Geist also hosted his own morning show, called “Way Too Early with Willie Geist”.

Geist published the “Good Talk, Dad” bestseller in co-authorship with his father, Bill Geist, in 2014. The book took a spot as a bestselling book in New York Times. Geist also published a New York Times bestseller in 2010, the “American Freak Show”. His Satire novel, “Loaded! Become a Millionaire Overnight and Lose 20 Pounds in 2 Weeks or Your Money Back!”, was published in 2011. The book satirizes the popular self-help genre.

Born in Evanston, Illinois, Geist came from the background of father Bill Geist, an acclaimed author, columnist and a correspondent for NBC. His mother, Jody Geist, is a social worker. Geist attended and graduated Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Geist was an editor of “The Vanderbilt Hustler”, the official newspaper for students of the University.

Geist was successful in sports at a very young age. During his time in high school, while he attended Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, New Jersey, he played football and basketball, advancing to be the captain of both teams.

Alongside his shiny broadcasting career, Geist is also a successful family man. Since 2003, he has been married to Christina Sharkey, his high school girlfriend. The couple has two children, a son, and a daughter. Their daughter, Lucie Joy Geist, was born in 2007, and their son, George William Geist, in 2009.

Geist has shown talent and interest in sports as early as during his high school education. Having a background of being a captain of two high school sports teams, and climbing up to edit a sport’s magazine during his college education, Geist’s talent in the field was undeniable. With a renowned broadcaster such as his father by his side, William Geist had all the conditions to become a successful correspondent and show host as he turned out to be.
